Chapter 8
To many people
4he spake by a parable:
5A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
To his disciples
10Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
16No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 17For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. 18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
To certain people
21My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
On a ship, to his disciples
22Let us go over unto the other side of the lake.
After rebuking the storm, to his disciples
25Where is your faith?
In the country of the Gadarenes, to the unclean spirit
30What is thy name?
To the man out of whom the devils were departed
39Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee.
To the multitudes thronging and pressing him
45Who touched me?
46Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
To a woman having an issue of blood
48Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
To Jairus
50Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
At Jairus’ house, to those that wept
52Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
To Jairus’ daughter
54Maid, arise.
Chapter 9
To his disciples
3Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. 4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. 5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
In a desert place, to the disciples
13Give ye them to eat.
14Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
To his disciples
18Whom say the people that I am?
20But whom say ye that I am?
22The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. 27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
At the transfiguration of Jesus
The Father spoke
35This is my beloved Son: hear him.
To the disciples and the father of a possessed son
41O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
To his disciples
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
48Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
To John the Apostle
50Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
In a village of the Samaritans, to James and John
55Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.
To a certain man who said he would follow Jesus
58Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
To another man
59Follow me.
60Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
To another man
62No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
