Matthew Pg 8

Chapter 16

In the coasts of Magdala, to the Pharisees and the Sadducees

2When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.

To his disciples

6Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

8O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

Context Mat 16:1-12

In the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, to the disciples

13Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

15But whom say ye that I am?

To Simon Peter

17Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Context Mat 16:13-20

To Peter

23Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

To the disciples

24If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. 28Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Context Mat 16:21-28

Chapter 17

On the mount when Jesus was transfigured

The Father spoke

5This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

At the Transfiguration, to Peter, James, and John

7Arise, and be not afraid.

9Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

11Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

Context Mat 17:1-13

To his disciples

17O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me.

To the disciples when they asked,

19Why could not we cast him out?

20Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Context Mat 17:14-21

In Galilee, to the disciples

22The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again.

Context Mat 17:22-23

In Capernaum, to Peter

25What thinkest thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? Of their own children, or of strangers?

26Peter saith unto him, Of strangers.

Then are the children free. 27Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
